This month, the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) is proud to introduce Archie Williamson, founder and managing director of Diversified Systems, Inc. (DSI), as the May Entrepreneur of the Month. Archie truly exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit, having launched his management consulting firm more than 25 years ago with just $3,000 and a credit card. Today, DSI provides services in 10 states and the District of Columbia, with headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

Archie’s journey as an entrepreneur began at the age of 10 where he delivered newspapers and cut neighbors’ lawns. At a young age, Archie felt compelled to serve others. As he progressed and acquired new skills in the field of consulting, Archie realized he wanted to create something of his own, as well as create opportunities for talented and hardworking people — two things he could not attain working in a corporate environment. When Archie approached his former company about the possibility of venturing into the public sector, they wanted nothing to do with that market.

Just last year, DSI acquired that company’s contracts and its employees.

With a background in business administration and computer systems, IT proved to be DSI’s sweet spot, allowing Archie to marry his technical skills with his ability to build impactful relationships. Through DSI’s work, Archie hopes to alter the way companies view partnerships with minority business enterprises (MBEs).

“Many organizations see partnering with MBEs as simply fulfilling MBE spending obligations,” said Williamson. “What I enjoy most…is the opportunity to demonstrate the real value we lend to our partners above and beyond their MBE spending. We’ve been able to serve as strategic partners for prominent consulting firms and clients, and I find that incredibly rewarding.”

Archie also hopes to recruit minority talent in IT, a demographic that is commonly underrepresented in the field.

“Opening doors for young people and other minority entrepreneurs who might not have otherwise considered IT…has been very fulfilling for me both personally and professionally.”

Archie attributes DSI’s success to the exclusive services provided by MBDA, including partnership development and new business opportunities. Furthermore, MBDA has matched DSI to valuable partners and programs in both the federal and private sector arenas. In 2012, DSI completed Accenture’s Diverse Supplier Development Program (DSDP), an 18-month world-class mentoring program. DSI is also a certified member of the National Minority Supplier Diversity Council and a certified Minority Business Enterprise.

DSI prides itself on fostering an environment where employees are not just another number, but key stakeholders in organizational and client success.

Archie’s Advice to Entrepreneurs

The best piece of advice I can offer is that no matter what, family needs to come first. You absolutely must work hard for your business and your team, but allowing yourself and your employees to focus on their respective families when the need arises will benefit you and your business in the long run. Being very flexible with your team will provide you a tenfold return in the long run. That is the easiest way a small business can differentiate itself against its larger competitors. Remain innovative and nimble!
