The State of Minority Business Enterprises (2002 Data)
Year 2006

Minority business enterprises (MBEs) are a rapidly growing and increasingly important segment of the U.S. and global economy. From 1997-2002, the total number of U.S. companies increased by 2 million and over 50% of this increase was accounted for by minority-owned firms. Minority-owned businesses are diverse, participating in a wide variety of industries: financial services, health care, construction, transportation, and other services. However, despite impressive growth in the number of U.S. minority firms, MBEs must increase their size, scale, and the economic viability of their firms if they are to compete effectively in the global economy. To accomplish this, MBEs must be assertive, innovative competitors who will not fear or retreat from globalization.

There is a major demographic transformation occurring in this country. Minorities, who now represent approximately 26% of the U.S. population, are expected to represent nearly 50% by 2050. This will create opportunities for consumer and business sales in those communities where minority businesses, if correctly positioned, could have a competitive advantage. These demographic changes will ultimately alter the relationships between corporate America and communities that have traditionally been under-served by the business sector. The New Realities for Minority Business provides a general overview of the business environment and serve as a starting point for a discussion of the necessary strategies for promoting minority business success in the 21st century.
